Below are some explanations of the replication process, printing, and other options:
Replication / Glass Mastering:
This process is generally considered in creation of a 1000 discs or more. The standardized master format for pressing or stamping replicated DVD's is a "Glass Master" or "Stamper" and or a DLT. (Digital Linear Tape) These formats are used in the actual process of replication of the media. You may submit a master in any format including DVD which would be compressed as opposed to a file format (SD/QT) which would be un-compressed and have slightly less loss of resolution. Any SD/HD video tape format can be submitted as a master but would need to be converted to a DLT, especially if you are going to have CSS done. (Content Scrambling System - aka: Encryption) The actual dvd replication process is a manufacturing technique known as injection molding. From there the disc is sent to the next phase which is printing.
Silkscreen Printing:
Silkscreen printing is done with using screens. This process uses films from your artwork. (1 per color) Screens are then produced from those films and are set-up to print directly to the face of the replicated disc. This style of printwork is best for jobs with lots of tonal , solid colors. (Graphics / Logos)
Offset Printing:
This style print is done using plates to produce much more intricate artwork and the final result is photographic quality.Recommended for four color processing in CMYK.
CSS:
This is a encryption process in which a DLT is created with a scrambling video signal encode of the data to scramble the video pixels so they can't be cloned directly from disc after replication. This is in turn transferred to the glass master to prohibit any attempt to copy the subsequent replicated discs. The Content Scrambling System(CSS) is used to scramble the audio/vidoe data on each replicated disc. Each video tittle set (VTS) can be selectively scrambled using a unique key. Each unique title is assigned one disc key and up to 99 title keys (one per VTS), which are stored on the disc in encrypted form. In the decoder the original keys are obtained through decryption and are used to de-scramble the data.
